La série raconte l'histoire de son personnage éponyme, un vampire dont l'âme humaine lui a été restitué par des bohémiens et qui le tourmente sans trêve pour ses crimes passés. Avec divers associés, Angel travaille comme détective privé à Los Angeles et s'attache à aider les gens dans le besoin et à combattre les forces démoniaques (représentées notamment par Wolfram & Hart) tout en devant lutter contre sa propre nature.
